CNES in French Guiana : highlights of 2021

Texte

On Friday 21 January, Marie-Anne Clair, Director of Europe’s spaceport, accompanied by Marie-José Gauthier, the “Space for French Guiana” delegate, presented the 2021 Space Report to the local press.

This was an opportunity to look back at the highlights of the past year and recall CNES's commitment to the regional development of French Guiana.

Committed to regional development

Texte

In 2021, CNES renewed its commitments to its partners for projects in favour of economic development, education, training, inclusion and digital technology:

- With the 22 municipalities of French Guiana: the French space agency has allocated €12.8 million for the period 2021-2027, i.e. €1.8 million per year.

- With the French government and the Territorial Community in French Guiana (Collectivité Territoriale de Guyane): the French space agency confirmed its financial contribution of €22.78 million to European programmes in the region, under an agreement to be signed in the first quarter of 2022.

- With the University of French Guiana and the GIP-FCIP (Local Education Authority): these partnerships have financed digital equipment, the "Maison pour la Science", a research building, and the extension of the Kourou University Institute of Technology, as well as supporting 27 Guyanese secondary school graduates with a higher education grant.

In addition to these commitments, the French space agency is contributing its expertise through the “Station K” Fablab in Kourou, which was inaugurated in April and financed under section C of the space stimulus plan. This laboratory supports three space application projects benefiting the region, one of which is led by a Guianese company.
